On Governor Otter's State of the State Address
Many of us were dismayed by the depth of the cuts that Governor Otter proposed in his State of the State Address on Jan. 11.
Democrats in the legislature will do what they can to modify the Governor's proposals, but their numbers are too few to make a significant impact without help from moderate Republicans. Most moderate Repu blicans, however, fear primary contests from the "Tea Party" branch of the party, and are unlikely to oppose the majority of their party.
We cannot fight back without good Democratic or Independent candidates providing similar and credible challenges. If we don't take action, Idaho will lose thousands of young people who see better schools and opportunities elsewhere.
In the News/Discussion Forum there are links (or full content) of four articles: Sharon Fisher's summary of the Governor's speech, the United Vision for Idaho response to the speech, Sharon's earlier article on ways our tax system could be tweaked, and the text of the speech itself. Please give yourself time to become informed on these issues of great importance.
Work for the 2010 elections is underway. The most effective way to lessen the heavy cuts we are facing this year is to let every legislator know we have candidates ready to bring their actions to light--and a war chest. Statewide, the number of small donors to the Dems has gone up! Join us with a small monthly donation of $10 or $20 (or even $1 or $5).
