Canyon County Democrats Central Committee approves a resolution in support of a single-payer health care system

Health Care Resolution

Canyon County (Idaho) Democrats

Passed November 24, 2009

 Whereas:

About 50 million Americans are without health insurance

45,000 Americans die annually due to lack of health insurance

14,000 Americans lose access to insurance daily

6 of 10 personal bankruptcies are a result of medical bills

Spiraling costs threaten to make U.S. industry uncompetitive on the world market

The present insurance system incentivizes fee-for-service over wellness.

And:

In view of the fact that the legislatures of the United States are considering reforms to the present health care system:

It is Resolved that the Canyon Country Democratic Central Committee urges the State Congressional delegation to engage deeply in forging a solution to the pending crisis which :

a) Provides comprehensive coverage to all citizens.

b) Preserves patient choice of physicians.

c) Covers pre-existing conditions

d) Is affordable over the long term.

e) Moves towards a “wellness” model as exemplified by the Mayo Clinics.

In consideration of the above, it is the conclusion of this committee that the best solution to this crisis is a single-payer system similar to Medicare.
